Project description
Largo dei Transiti is situated in a neighbourhood full of contrasts, which is both a problem and a solution. It is an upcoming cosmopolitan area but is also riddled with crime.
The main target of the project is to give the public space back to citizens, injecting vitality by increasing usability and promoting interactions, and thus reducing degradation and ghettoïsation.
The variety and richness of the neighbourhood suggest a fluid approach to the use of space. Spaces are versatile and can be exploited in different ways rather than being assigned to a specific use.
In this vein, the square is redesigned with a platform: a device that can be easily reconfigured for different uses or events, such as open-air theatre, market, exhibitions, sport classes, etc. In this way life, not static objects, drives the transformation.
Spaces are neutral, with hierarchies which are not physical but of usability.
A continuous carpet harmonizes the space and gives it a pedestrian vocation.
The square is re-centered and its edges are redefined by means of a few, simple elements. Vegetation, seats and lights divide the square from the road. The platform, equipped with electricity, water, a data connection etc., occupies one of the shorter sides, forming both a background to the space and its heart.
The square becomes a trigger space which, by amplifying existing processes, enables a rich variety of events to take place.
The project steps aside in a certain sense, creating the conditions necessary for other projects to be.
